On July 25, 2015, the Boys & Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region - El Pomar Club and UnitedHealthcare will build an awesome new playground, designed by our kids and families, in just ONE day. The project is in partnership with KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. Did you know that play is actually really important for healthy development? Here's what KaBOOM! has to say about the value of play:
"We believe that the well-being of society begins with the well-being of children. This is why we’re such big advocates of balanced and active play, which is essential to enable kids to thrive. Just as a healthy diet balances proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other nutrients, a balanced “play diet” should include a mix of all kinds of play, because different types have different benefits. For example, play-dough creations, blocks, and make-believe spark the imagination and teach problem-solving skills by encouraging kids to recombine ideas, make associations, transform objects, and appreciate that problems may have numerous approaches and multiple solutions 1,2. Running, jumping, and climbing get legs moving and hearts pumping, and kids who engage in physically active play—at least two to three times a week—and engage in low levels of sedentary TV time are almost two times less likely to be classified as overweight 3. Additionally, exploring playgrounds with families or playing hide-and-seek with friends helps kids learn to work together, collaborate, share, and be empathetic. All children need balanced and active play every day to thrive However, kids today are playing less actively than any previous generation, with sedentary time—inside and in front of a screen—replacing time spent building muscles, expanding minds, and being social. This lack of active play is causing them profound physical, intellectual, social, and emotional harm, and it is imperative that we reduce sedentary time and increase active play to ensure our children have long, healthy, and happy lives."
The El Pomar Boys & Girls Club must contribute $8,500 to cover the a portion of the playground's cost - we'd love to have your help as we work to raise that amount. By donating during the month of June and July, you’ll be helping hundreds of local kids to incorporate healthy, outdoor play into their daily lives. Just go to bgcppr.org/give, to make your donation online. Or, get involved by becoming one of the 200 volunteers who will help to build the playground on July 25th!
