WHO: The Boys & Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region (BGCPPR) will unveil new developments in the Before & After School Child Care program to the community and recognize both the Department of Army and the El Pomar Foundation for their financial support of the program.

In 2003, BGCPPR was selected as a pilot site by the Boys & Girls Club of America and the Department of Army to support “Operation Proud Partners” by providing military families with access to the programs the club offered for youth 6-18 years old. BGCPPR surpassed the initial goal of 100 military kids and continues to serve over 500 through the program history.

In June 2006, BGCPPR was invited as 1 of 17 of 4400 clubs to participate in the unveiling of the ASPYN initiative. To date, BGCPPR is one of 14 to contract with the Department of Army. BGCPPR is the front runner, having opened 4 sites in 3 school districts since August 2007. BGCPPR is currently serving 92 kids in ASPYN. BGCPPR Board of Directors adopted the program and has provided over $200,000 from the organizations investment reserves to continue.

WHAT: Army School Age Programs in Your Neighborhood (ASPYN) was created to provide support to the growing military population at Ft. Carson, due to the worldwide impact of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) strategy. Due to the overwhelming number of troops being relocated to the Pikes Peak area, the Department of Army has chosen to partners with the BGCPPR to support army dependents to provide the same quality before and after school child care that soldiers receive on installation. This opportunity allows soldiers to focus on their mission at hand, knowing that their children are in a safe and positive place. The ASPYN child care program is both licensed as well as accredited, which makes up only 2% of child care programs nationwide.

BGCPPR, celebrating its 120th birthday, is currently the front runner of ASPYN nationwide, mainly in part to the support of the Pikes Peak community. BGCPPR is in a very good position to provide quality before and after school child care programs to both the current military population but most importantly are prepared for the influx of military families over the coming years.
