BOYS & GIRLS CLUB BASKETBALL TEAM WINS GOLD CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP “The little Indians that could”

(COLORADO SPRINGS, CO), MARCH 7, 2008 – Boys & Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region 7th grade boys Gold Crown team received top honors last Sunday, March 2, as they clinched the Championship in Lakewood, Colorado.

“We are very proud of our young players, for their dedication to the sport, the team and to the Boys & Girls Club” said James Sullivan, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pikes Peak Region.  “These young men are excellent role models for our club members and represent our organization to the fullest.”

Sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club, the Cheyenne Mountain Indians 7th Grade Boys basketball team won the Gold Crown 2008 Silver Division League Championship by defeating Chatfield, Kent, Broomfield, Castle View, Rocky Mountain, Boulder & Cheyenne Mountain Tribe in the post season elimination playoffs. The team was put together on short notice in December with unlikely expectations for a championship. It consisted of a few players who had played organized youth basketball for several years and several others that were new to competitive basketball.

“As their coach what impressed me the most was their motivation and dedication. Our practice sessions are very tough, lasting for 2 hours with only three thirty seconds breaks, and all players would return to the court before that time elapsed ready to resume practice, “ said Coach Frank Haynes. “Success comes from hard work and these players did that while bonding together as a team”.

This was the first time the Gold Crown Foundation has seen two teams from the same school (or feeder program) face each other in the championship game. The tournament hosted over 520 boys and girls teams combined. Kevin Petty, Program Director at the Gold Crown Foundation commented, “The Gold Crown Foundation was very impressed with the Cheyenne Mountain Indians and attributes the success of the strong program to the dedicated coaches and players.”
